  • S.ircle o.f S.afety

A Haven of Hope for Healing and Independence

S.ircle o.f S.afety (S.o.S) is committed to stand for women and children suffering at the hands of terrorists in their own homes. Innocent people locked in the silent horror of relationship violence. S.o.S believes in upholding the pledge for "...liberty and justice for all". These families deserve the freedom our nation fights and dies for. American women and children are being treated as Prisoners of War, held hostage behind the walls built to protect them. The face of their tormentor is a familiar one. It belongs to the same person who promises to love and respect them. Half the abusers who beat their spouse also beat their children. We must stop the Family legacies that keep the cycle of violence poisoning Denton County. S.o.S is not a band-aid solution to the problem of relationship violence. We offer a one-of-a-kind opportunity for families to understand why and how the violence is perpetuated and how to break the cycle. Our top priority is providing long-term safe and secure housing along with a 1-2 year recovery program. Our recovery process is unique.

    Communities in Schools

Improve your serve, and make a difference in a life!

    Who We Are

More than 20,000 Denton and Wise County public school students are in at-risk situations for failure and of dropping out of school. With the help of Communities in Schools of North Texas (CISNT), part of the nation's largest dropout prevention network, many will beat the odds this year and stay in school. CISNT, a program administered by the Texas Education Agency(TEA), is part of an innovative national approach established to combat the dropout problem.

    CISNT Belief

CISNT believes that personalism, accountability and the coordination of services are essential to meeting the needs of youth in at-risk situations. The CISNT model includes

    Our Mission

The mission of Communities In Schools of North Texas, Inc...

is to be the proven leader in coordinating and providing community based solutions that challenge young people to overcome barriers, succeed in school and prepare for life.

Communities In Schools of North Texas is a subdivision of a national nonprofit organization, which utilizes a multi-disciplinary approach to decrease the rate of students who drop out of school and increase the number of students who are promoted, pass the TAKS test and ultimately graduate from high school. Each year, over 27,000 students drop out of school in Texas. School dropouts often become unemployed workers, serve time in prison and appear on welfare rolls. Over 80% of prison inmates are high school dropouts, and dropouts are three times more likely to live in poverty than high school graduates. We believe that dropouts are not a school problem, rather a community problem.

Communities In Schools strives to develop public and private partnerships designed to link youth at risk of dropping out of school with the human services they need to achieve academic success. CIS recognizes that youth face many challenging issues such as gangs, drugs, pregnancy, domestic violence, poverty, learning disabilities, etc. which place a heavy burden on both the students and the school system. CIS serves the community by alleviating some of the stress placed on the school staff, coordinating fragmented social service agencies, and removing the barriers which often prevent students from staying in school.

    Our Needs

Communities In Schools of North Texas is seeking individuals and groups to serve as mentors to more than 2,000 at-risk students in Denton, Lewisville, Little Elm and Northwest ISD. Through one-on-one relationships with caring adults, CISNT believes that students have a better chance at success. To learn more about the opportunities to work with CISNT, contact Tena Burley at 972-355-6392 , or tburley@cisnt.org , or visit our website CISNT .

    World Vision

Millions of children and families in the United States live with the crushing reality of poverty. In fact, child poverty is higher in America than in any other industrialized nation. More than 27 million children live in low-income families that lack basic life necessities. Health care is out of reach for many who struggle just to put food on the table. Children and families in impoverished communities face the threats of school drop-out, drugs, gangs and crime. Lack of educational opportunities result in a vicious cycle that can keep families in poverty for generations. World Vision is working in 10 major cities and communities across the nation to help children and families like these to build a better future. We do this by bringing together existing and new resources to help communities find their own lasting, sustainable solutions. World Vision calls this transformational development, children, families and communities working together to build a healthy and hope-filled environment for generations to come. Denton Kiwanis

    Receives State Award

    DENTON KIWANIS RECEIVES STATE AWARD

The Denton Kiwanis Club's Reach Out and Read program has been awarded a 'year-end' gift of $3500.00 from the Texas Reach Out and Read Coalition. In presenting this award, the Texas Coalition expressed their appreciation for the Denton Club's efforts in giving the gift of literacy to the children within the Denton community. This is the biggest single grant the Denton ROR program has received in the past 6-1/2 years. The funding was provided from a variety of sources including individuals, private foundations, corporations such as Target, Verizon, and Walmart, as well as a 2006 Read and Romp fundraiser promoting early childhood reading and fitness.

The Denton Reach and Out and Read Program distributed 3566 books to pre-school Denton children in 2006. 1500 of these books were given out in the name of Kiwanis at the clinic of Glenna G. Harris, MD, the ROR Site Co-ordinator, and the 2066 remaining books were distributed through the Denton County Health Department's well-children's clinic, a satellite of the Denton Kiwanis 2006 ROR program. To date, the Denton Kiwanis Club has distributed over 15,500 books to the children of the Denton Community.

In addition to this gift, the Denton Kiwanis ROR Program is funded through other grants and fund raisers. The local club will be conducting a raffle at the Kiwanis Club's "Taste of North Texas" which will be held on Thursday, March 15, 2007, at the UNT Coliseum. Many major and valuable items will be raffled including a guitar autographed by Willie Nelson and donated to Kiwanis by Ricky Rios of Texas Roadhouse. A Danbury Mint collector's baby doll donated by a Kiwanis member is also one of the items to be raffled. Tickets will be sold at the "Taste" for $l.00 each or six for $5.00.

The Denton Kiwanis Club meets every Tuesday in Cutter's Lounge of the Radisson Hotel at 12:00 Noon. Interested citizens may obtain additional information about the Denton Kiwanis Club or the Reach Out and Read Program by contacting the Denton Kiwanis Office at 940-387-6323.

Feed The Children - Nourish The Children

For more info Click on Feed The Children .

Feed The Children, led by its president Larry - involved in a massive international relief effort to benefit the millions of people devastated recently by the cyclone in Myanmar, and the earthquakes in China.

Feed the Children was one of the first charity organizations to actually get aid supplies past the military junta in Myanmar, and directly into the hands of the people there. And in China, they've also delivered over 1 million meals since the earthquake to those in the hardest-hit area of Chengdu.

On May 20th, Larry Jones made a public plea for more aid - specifically food - and he highlighted the efforts of Nourish The Children, an organization that's been providing food packages specifically designed and created for people suffering from malnourishment in developing countries and disaster zones.

Nourish The Children, led by Lee Iacocca (past President of the Ford Motor Company and ex-CEO of Chrysler), is also based here in the United States, and manufactures a nutrient-dense dietary solution called Vitameal, which has been described by Larry Jones as "…by far and away, the best product on the market…" for food-related relief efforts.

Each Vitameal food package costs $19.95USD, and contains enough food to nourish one child for one full month, or one adult for two weeks. All related details can be viewed on their website Click HERE , and all donations can be coordinated by your local Nourish The Children Ambassador.

Larry and Lee's goal is to raise funds to purchase Vitameal food packages from Nourish The Children, which will be automatically donated and distributed to the people of Myanmar and China via Feed The Children distribution channels at no cost.

What we're requesting is the help of organizations and facilities who would be open to hosting charity gala events or fundraising drives for this purpose.
